One of the biggest complaints I hear from Apple iphone owners is that they are still running out of space. I even have a friend who can not install new applications that I recommend to him because he can not fit just one more on his iphone.
While some users may just be limited by older iphones with 16 GB of storage, which made sense back when the apps were smaller, there are a few solutions that can help you free up a lot of space needed.
Here are some tips and tricks to free up space on your iphone.
Find out what's hogging your storage
First you want to know what takes as much storage. You can do this by opening the app settings, typing "General" and then selecting "Storage & icloud usage." Next, click "Manage Storage".
This will show a list of apps in the order of the largest to the smallest. Remove all applications that you do not use, you might be surprised by the amount of storage they consume.
Pro tip: Games are usually the worst offenders.
Erase the old messages!
The messages take up a lot of space on your iphone. You can stop your phone from saving them by going to settings > messages and typing "keep messages." Change from "Forever" or "1 year" to only 30 days.
Using the icloud Library
Keep your photos in the cloud instead of on your device. You can do this by visiting the settings > photos and camera and turning on icloud Photo library. Then select "Optimize iphone storage." When your phone is low on space, it will store your photos in the cloud and make way for new data.
While we are here, navigate to the bottom of the page and turn off the options to "keep the photo normal" for portrait and HDR mode. Those create duplicate photos each time you hang an image in these modes!
Try some magic
Somehow I missed this one, but it apparently works fine. The redditrs noticed last year that if you run out of space, you can head to the itunes store to try to rent a movie. As long as the movie file is larger than the space you have available, your attempt to rent it will fail and you will not be charged.
But just trying to make this attempt will force your phone to clear its pipes. Reddit suggests doing this several times in a row. Some commentators have noticed that they were able to release more than 3 GB of space.
Kill the Podcasts
This one hit me hard in the past. I'm going to get on a podcast kick for a week and subscribe to about 20 podcasts and then move on to my life. except the podcast application will continue to download new episodes as they come out, long after you have given up the interest.
Manage this by going to the settings > podcasts and selecting "Limit episodes." This way you can always have the most recent episode without downloading each shot each week. Open the Podcasts app and erase the old ones you might have, too.
Delete all these accidental videos, burst photos and screenshots
You might be surprised to see how many random videos you have stored on your iphone, some you probably don't even remember to take. You will find these, with screenshots that you may have cracked and no longer need, right in the list of "albums" inside the photos.
Pass and remove all the junk. While you are there, pop in the album "Splinters" and go through each one. The gusts can snap hundreds of photos in seconds, and you might not know if you did.
Take this as a bit of a lesson, however: if you can swing, always try to buy a model from the basic storage offered by Apple.
